Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent

Reading and Reflection

Reading 1:   Isaiah 1:10, 16-20
Responsorial Psalm:   Psalm 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21 and 23
Gospel:   Matthew 23:1-12

Occasionally I have heard someone complain about their priest or pastor or rabbi.   They seem to hold the leaders of our churches up to very close scrutiny.   But I don't think anyone could pass their rigid tests.   I would hate to be examined that closely myself!    Yet in today's Gospel Jesus tells his followers to still listen to the teaching of the Pharisees and the scribes because the material they teach is correct and important.   No one can live a perfect life and follow all the laws and the spirit of the laws.   As a parent there are many important guidelines I taught my children even though I have fallen short of following those guidelines.

The point is that our humanity gets in the way of our holiness all the time, but the Gospel never fails.   Let us avoid judging our faith by the conduct of the leaders and make certain that we love the Gospel and love those who do their best to teach and live it.

Reminder:   Rice Bowls are in the Narthex with great suggestions for Lenten sacrifices.
