Thursday of the Second Week of Lent

Reading and Reflection

Reading I:   Jeremiah 17:5-10
Responsorial Psalm:   Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6
Gospel:   Luke 16:19-31

The Gospel today is a direct challenge to those of us who have enough food, shelter and healthcare to find ways to share with those who don't.   Certainly during Lent we have many opportunities to help out others who are in need.   But we also need to be looking at the causes of hunger, homelessness and the uninsured.   One way to make a change is to seriously study the candidates for political office this May and this Fall.   What are their positions or ideas to repair the economic chasms? to repair and improve the housing problems? to provide healthcare for the 47 million uninsured Americans?    We might also look to see how candidates have a global outlook on these problems.   It is wonderful that we donate time, money, food, Habitat work, and healthcare items.   Keep up the good work.   And.... let's find ways to end the problem, not just alleviate the symptoms!

Reminder:   Rice Bowls are in the Narthex with great suggestions for Lenten sacrifices.

The readings can be accessed at  http://www.usccb.org/nab/022108.shtml  This is an easy click to the daily readings.  Use the back button on your browser to return to the reflection.    We continue to build this ministry and pray for parishioners to contribute monthly.
