Most of us at St. James never thirst. We are affluent and have access to water and many other beverages. If you are wanting to experience a longing for God physically, try a water fast for a few hours (no more than eight). You will find that your whole mind and body are taken over by a desire for water, for moisture, similar to needing baptism. One time I walked into church, not on Good Friday, and found the baptismal font empty. It was necessary to clean and repair the pump and so it had been drained. I had the feeling that not just water was missing, but so was my tactile feeling of Jesus in the water. I needed to go to one of the holy water fonts. I like to keep holy water in my home and more and more people are putting holy water fonts in their homes. Another practice for Lent might be to bring a receptacle to take some holy water home and have everyone anoint themselves regularly, or you anoint little ones. To bring this wonderful sacramental into the home, helps us all stay close to God and have our thirst satisfied.
